Darwinia+ has passed Microsoft Xbox Live Arcade’s certification process, and is due for release in January 2010. The game is made by UK developer Introversion, responsible for the cult favourite DEFCON. It is best described as a combination of Darwinia and Multiwinia, and is apparently “a highly unique blend of stunning retro-arcade visuals and explosive real-time strategy gameplay“. The game even has its own haiku:

Retro fractal globe
Evil virus run amok
Save green sprite from death!

Modern Warfare 2

According to TorrentFreak, Modern Warfare 2 for the PC is the most pirated game of 2009, topping the list at 4,100,000 downloads, despite only being released two months ago.

The Sims 3, Prototype, Need for Speed Shift, and Street Fighter IV help round off the top five for the year, all of which appeared on the PC platform.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii was the highest downloaded Wii title with 1,150,000 downloads.

The report notes that the total download figures for this year have doubled since last year, and that the PC remains the main target for torrent downloads, with more than three times the downlods of the Wii and the Xbox 360.

Xbox 360

Jeremiah Gilliam, 22, broke into at least 200 cars and several homes. One of the things this light-fingered Bronx resident stole was an Xbox 360. Which he promptly took home, plugged in, logged on and played online. On the stolen Xbox account.

The original owner of the console noticed that someone was online with his account, and phoned the police. They contacted Microsoft and the relevant ISP, and an arrest followed.

Gilliam has been charged with grand larceny.

The popular trivia game 1 vs 100 will be free over Christmas

Major Nelson has revealed more news via his blog recently, this time about the increasingly popular 1 vs 100 Live.

All Xbox Live members, including Silver will be able to play 1 vs 100 over the course of a few days in the Christmas period, with a “special holiday episode” on Boxing Day. I assume the special episode he is referring to will be in the USA, but there may be one in the UK too.

The actual quote:

“1 v 100 Live will be free for all Xbox Live members (Gold and Silver) from Dec. 24th to the 28th (in regions where it is available.)”

I would definitely recommend giving it a try, and I know I will be online on it at at least one time in the next few days…

Heavy Rain Collector's Edition (EU)

Sony has unveiled the European Collector’s Edition of Heavy Rain through their EU Playstation Blog. Thankfully it doesn’t include useless tat, so even those who don’t have deep enough pockets to spend on night-vision goggles may want to read on.

As well as the snazzy box – that apparently gives the impression of 3D rain-drops due to a ‘special embossing’ on the slipcase – you will also get a voucher that entitles you to extras that us lowly peasants won’t get (at least some of it anyway).

  • Heavy Rain: Chronicle One – The Taxidermist. This is going to be the first piece of downloadable content for the game, and expands upon the original ‘Taxidermist’ demo that was shown at E3 last year. This will eventually be available for anyone to buy through PSN, but those that buy the Collector’s Edition will get it early.
  • The Heavy Rain Official Soundtrack – Recorded at The Abbey Road Studios (where acts like The Beatles and Pink Flyod recorded tracks) and features ‘powerful orchestral themes’.
  • Dynamic XMB theme

Details of pricing and avenues of release are yet to be announced, so in the meantime you can check out the full image of the Collector’s Edition box and read a few more details here.

The new Team Fortress 2 update ends the battle between soldiers and demomen...

To celebrate the release of the latest Team Fortress 2 update, Valve is giving Steam users the chance to play the game online for free this weekend.

The new update entitled “The War” brings two new maps and a new item for the soldier class. Users of Valve’s popular online content delivery system, Steam can download the game and play for free over the course of this weekend only (so act fast!)

The game is also 50% off to buy over the same weekend, so if you enjoy playing it for free then you can buy it cheap and keep playing. I am in the process of downloading it right now, and I would advise that you do the same!

Rubber Soul is the latest full album to be released as DLC for The Beatles Rock Band

Rubber Soul is the latest full album to be released as DLC for The Beatles Rock Band

Yesterday Harmonix released the last of their announced DLC albums for The Beatles Rock Band, “Rubber Soul”. For 1440 Microsoft Points players can download the full album, or individual tracks can be bought for 160MSP a piece.

“Drive My Car”, “I’m Looking Through You” and “If I Needed Someone” are already on the disk, but this DLC includes great songs such as “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown”, “Nowhere Man” and “The Word”.

It could be the most fun to play of the three albums that have been released so far, and probably the best value too. If I was going to buy any of the albums that are currently available I would go for this one, but I’ll probably just pick a couple of tracks. Now if they were to release the full “Help!” album…

Everquest Gets 16th Expansion – Underfoot

That’s right kids; Everquest is far from dead and now has a new expansion from SOE. The expansion pack, called Underfoot, will be the sixteenth expansion for the long-running MMORPG.

Underfoot costs $39.99 and includes all currently released content – which means all the current expansion packs – plus new zones, quests, raids, updated tradeskills and an achievement system. SOE clearly don’t believe this game is dead yet.

You can find out more and buy the expansion from the game’s official website.
