Green Day: Rock Band will feature tracks spanning (most of) the band's 20+ year career

In a preview by Entertainment Weekly, a few new details, including the full set-list were released for Green Day: Rock Band – the latest in Harmonix and EA’s popular rhythm game series.

The game will feature 47 playable songs on the disc, just more than The Beatles: Rock Band, across three venues. The American Idiot, and Dookie albums will be included in their entireties, with all except the 6 tracks that are available as DLC from 21st Century Breakdown also playable.

Players will be taken to MK Bowl – the venue for their Bullet in a Bible live album – for a large portion of the songs in the game, including the American Idiot album. The other two included venues are The Fox Theatre in Oakland California (the band’s hometown) and the fictional, ‘hole in the wall’ venue called “The Warehouse”, designed to represent the smaller venues the band played in their earlier years.

Popular tracks such as Hitchin a Ride, Minority, and Brain Stew from Green Day’s back catalogue are also included in the game. However, there is notably no sign at all of the band’s first two albums, which is sure to disappoint many fans (myself included). Despite this little niggle though, the game is looking quite promising – especially if you are a Green Day fan.

Green Day: Rock Band will be released on June 8th on Xbox 360, PS3 and Wii.

Gears of War 3 Leaked + Another Epic Announcement Imminent?

Gears of War 3 had already been previously confirmed for a 2011 release

The internet had been buzzing with rumours about what Cliff Bleszinski’s big announcement was going to be on the Jimmy Fallon Show next Monday in the US, after his appearance had been pushed back from Thursday. Obviously the big rumour was Gears of War 3, the final installment in Epic Games‘ blockbuster trilogy.

Well that rumour was confirmed earlier today, though by complete accident. Perhaps it was timed to automatically go live after the original date of the TV appearance and somebody forgot to change it, or maybe somebody accidentally hit the big red ‘announce’ button, but it was confirmed on the Xbox 360 dashboard that Gears 3 will be released 12 months from now in April 2011.

While this announcement does please me more than just a little bit, I do have to feel sorry for Cliffy B and the team at Epic Games. I’m sure that a lot of work had gone into the announcement, only for it to just pop up in a completely non-spectacular way on Xbox Live. Even though it almost certainly wouldn’t have lived up to the almost ludicrously awesome Gears 2 announcement at GDC 2008, chances are they had something a bit more exciting planned to go with that TV appearance.

However, Cliffy B updated his Twitter not all that long ago, saying that there will be “two announcements about two upcoming games” on Monday. One of the other rumours below Gears 3 in the original hype around the appearance was the as yet un-named shooter from People Can Fly, a studio acquired not too long ago by Epic Games. Chances are that’s what it will be. Or maybe even Shadow Complex 2? We shall see…

Even though the main, big announcement has already been ruined, I’m sure it will still be worth tuning in to the Jimmy Fallon show (on YouTube most likely if you don’t live in the US like myself) to watch Cliff Bleszinski’s announcements next week. He is not the type to disappoint…

Conviction was originally set for a simultaneous release on Xbox 360 and PC

Ubisoft’s most recent release schedule has revealed a two week delay for the PC version of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction.

It was supposed to be released on April 16th, the same day as the 360 version, but PC gamers will now have to wait until the 30th to get their hands on the game which 360 users have already had a demo of for a few days now.

Ubisoft really haven’t been doing their PC market any favours recently…

War In the North will probably be quite focused on co-operative play

Developers Snowblind Studios, along with Warner Bros. today announced the latest addition to the growing list of Lord of the Rings games.

It will feature locations and narratives familiar to fans of J.R.R. Tolkien’s novels and their big screen-counterparts, as well as original storylines.

Martin Tremblay, president of Warner Bros. Interactive had this to say:

“With The Lord of the Rings: War in the North we are taking a mature approach to the widely celebrated property with authentic portrayals of battles and all new storylines.

Utilising the award-winning and passionate development team at Snowblind Studios, we are looking to evolve the RPG experience and deliver The Lord of the Rings game fans have been waiting for.”

Splinter Cell Conviction is the latest installment in the hit Tom Clancy series from Ubisoft

It was announced on Xbox Live’s Inside Xbox service that a playable demo of Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell Conviction will be available this week.

360 players will be able to download the demo on March 18th (this Thursday) and get a taste of Sam Fisher’s latest, and possibly greatest game.

The demo features a ‘brutal’ interrogation scene, as well as a level from later in the game in order to give the player a good idea of the gameplay and story of the game without giving away any big plot points.

Judging by some of the previews that have been out and some of the announced features in Conviction, I would definitely suggest downloading this demo and giving it a try.

Crackdown 2 Release Date Announced

Crackdown 2 is being developed by Ruffian Games in Dundee, Scotland

Ruffian Games – the developers of Crackdown 2 – today announced the release date for their upcoming sandbox game via their Twitter feed.

After a couple of little teases, they announced a 9th July 2010 release date (6th July in America).

The game will take place in Pacific City, the setting established in the first game, and will feature 4-player co-operative play as well as all-new 16 player online multiplayer modes.

The original was a brilliant game – one of my personal favourites on the Xbox 360 – and so I am very much looking forward to the sequel. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on this one…

Portal 2 Officially Announced

Portal was one of the biggest surprise hits of 2007

After updating Portal on the PC a few times this month, with little things such as this alternative ending sequence to tease a potential sequel, Valve have officially announced Portal 2.

The only info so far is that the game is set for a Holiday 2010 release – which means November/December time in American-speak. The game was rumoured a while ago to be a prequel, but these rumours were circulating about two years ago, so who knows?

I am definitely looking forward to doing some new crazy tests with the ‘help’ of good ‘friend’ GLaDOS…

PS3 Still Has 6+ Years Left According to Sony US CEO

The PS3 launched back in November 2006

The CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America, Jack Tretton has dismissed any claims that there will be a follow-up to the Playstation 3 anytime soon.

He said that he believes that we are still currently “in the first 25% to 30% of this generation”. Agreeable, given that Sony and Microsoft are still to release their motion controllers that should add another few years to their respective lifespans.

This is what he told Fast Company:

“I would say we’re sitting in the catbird seat. We’ve just passed the third year of the PlayStation 3 and we’re just hitting our stride. And I don’t think anyone is saying, ‘This is a five-year cycle; what’s new on the horizon?’ I can’t even imagine what can be done technically beyond the PlayStation 3 in the near future.

I can’t say that I have even really given a thought to what or when the next generation will be yet. I suppose that the motion controllers the two companies are coming out with could almost be said to be generation 7.5 as it will add so much to both systems. But they have both said before that there is still a long way to go in this generation. Personally, I’m in no rush to move on just yet…

GoldenEye Maps in Perfect Dark XBLA

The Xbox Live Arcade remake of Perfect Dark will be released in March of this year

The executive producer of the remake of Perfect Dark for XBLA told Kotaku that the game will contain maps and weapons from GoldenEye in its multiplayer mode.

The weapons will appear under different names to their GoldenEye counterparts, and the maps that were featured in the original Perfect Dark (Felicity, Temple and Complex) will also appear in the remake.

This is sure to please many of the people that have been demanding GoldenEye be released on XBLA, though it does raise the question once again as to why Rare won’t (or can’t) just release GoldenEye itself…

Perfect Dark will be released on Xbox Live Arcade this March.
