Yesterday we reported that Microsoft CEO, Steve Ballmer, let slip that Blu-ray accessories could well be on their way to the Xbox 360.

Even though Microsoft already released a statement backtracking Ballmer’s comments, Major Nelson has today come out and pretty much closed the idea of Blu-ray coming to the Xbox. He said:

“During an interview yesterday, Steve Ballmer was asked about Blu-ray and the Xbox 360. I want to clear something up – Steve was referring to Blu-ray accessories for the PC. As we have said in the past, we have no plans to introduce a Blu-ray drive for the Xbox 360. In fact, the future of home entertainment starts very soon when Xbox 360 becomes the first and only console to offer instant-on 1080p streaming HD movies. With a library of thousands of TV shows and movies to choose from, Xbox 360 owners can instantly watch the movies they want, when they want, in the highest form of high definition.”

Who knows what to make of this…

It seems Microsoft have forgotten about the age old media war as they are now looking at the option to add Blu-ray accessories to the Xbox 360.

In a recent interview with Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, he was asked whether the Xbox would ever associate itself with a Blu-ray player, like rival Sony.

He said: “Well I don’t know if we need to put Blu-ray in there—you’ll be able to get Blu-ray drives as accessories.

“I think the future of movies is on-demand actually, as opposed to via distribution on physical media. So we’re just going to keep driving forward.”

Is this a slip of the tongue remark, or are we looking too much into this?

Microsoft released a statement shortly after, stating: “Our solution for HD quality video on an Xbox 360 is coming this fall with Zune Video and 1080p instant-on HD streaming. As far as our future plans are concerned, we’re not ready to comment.”

Natal could be used for Fable III

fable 3

Microsoft Games Studio’s creative head Peter Molyneux yesterday hinted that next year’s Fable III could be playable with the upcoming motion sensor add-on for the Xbox 360, Project Natal.

It was already understood that Fable III would support Natal due to Molyneux’s heavy support of the technology and the game’s introduction of tactile elements such as the new ‘Touch’ mechanic, but this theory has been quashed.

Molyneux said: “I am going to say it’s going to use a controller. But, I’ve never said it’s not going to use Natal. And obviously what would probably happen if I started talking about this is you would see a little red dot appear moving on my forehead. And then as I would start to speak the words then there would be a shot, gunfire, and I would be assassinated.”

He continued, “Do you really think, knowing me, I wouldn’t want to use something like Natal? I mean that’s just mad, man.”

Fable III is due for release on the Xbox 360 late next year.

Epic Games have announced that Gears of War 3 will not be released for the current Xbox 360, and is more than likely to be ‘next-gen’ release, meaning it will not be out for a predicted four, or even five years.

President of Epic Games, Mike Capps, was at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend and revealed: “If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That’s about four or five years away, I think.”

Capps also stated that the company has been working on Unreal Engine 4, the successor to the godly Unreal Engine 3, for seven years now, and that it would be in fully functional with the next generation of consoles.

    rock band update

A new patch has been released for Rock Band 2, which will add some brand new dimensions to the game, including the anticipated ‘Rock Band Network’.

The Rock Band Network is a community feature where users can upload songs from their PCs to try them out using the game’s tools, and if successful, could earn a tidy sum of cash.

The Network is due to be fully released in the next couple of weeks, as it is currently in closed beta.

Other notable new additions are that you can now download songs whilst playing the game, and have the ability to use a wireless microphone, instead of the bog-standard wired one.

Finally, along with in game features such as hammer-ons and pull-offs being fixed, there’s now an option where you can see which songs you have fully starred.
