Crackdown 2 is being developed by Ruffian Games in Dundee, Scotland

Ruffian Games – the developers of Crackdown 2 – today announced the release date for their upcoming sandbox game via their Twitter feed.

After a couple of little teases, they announced a 9th July 2010 release date (6th July in America).

The game will take place in Pacific City, the setting established in the first game, and will feature 4-player co-operative play as well as all-new 16 player online multiplayer modes.

The original was a brilliant game – one of my personal favourites on the Xbox 360 – and so I am very much looking forward to the sequel. I would definitely recommend keeping an eye on this one…

Crackdown 2 To Get a Demo

Ruffian, the developer of Crackdown 2, has assured gamers that the game will get a pre-release demo.

James Cope, producer of the game, spoke to IGN about the possibility of a demo, confirming that there will be one but declining to say when we can expect to see it on Xbox Live.

“You can definitely expect a demo to hit Live before the game is out but I can’t say when that will be… yet,” said Cope.

“The Crackdown demo was fantastic and we want to carry on in that form.”

If you played the first Crackdown then you should know how hilariously fun the game can be when playing with a friend, so us fans won’t really need a demo if it’s more of the same with added goodness on top. Of course, that is the case as the game now has a fully fledged multiplayer mode that can support up to sixteen players, as well as four-player co-op for the main story mode.

Crackdown 2 has no firm release date, but Ruffian is aiming for a Q1/Q2 2010 release for Xbox 360.

US magazine, Game Informer had the privilege of getting the first real details to do with Crackdown 2. They went to Ruffian Games and found out much more than what we previously knew.

All that we knew before was that it was a new developer (Ruffian Games instead of Realtime Worlds), that it would now be four-Player co-op and that there would be a competitive sixteen player online mode. According to Game Informer, the sequel sees the Agency in a three way-war when many of the inhabitants of Pacific City have been infected by a zombie-like virus, and a large portion of the rest are in a civilian gang unhappy that the government could not contain the virus.

If you didn’t notice, I did just say Pacific City. This is because we now know that the game takes place in the same city as the original Crackdown, although with a few changes. Some roads and buildings have been destroyed or demolished, and there will probably be new features here and there. Also featuring are new weapons and vehicles, now including a Helicopter. Some vehicles have been upgraded with things like mounted turrets to accomodate four players in co-op.

Finally they have said that the city decays over time due to the spreading infection, meaning that the city will certainly look and feel different, but maybe your favourite routes around the city will no longer be accessible due to collapsing buildings. The mutant civilians will also become more fearsome as the game progresses.

A lot of info to make any Crackdown fans look forward to the sequel just a bit more. I know I am.

If you’re like me, and always jump the gun about another Developer taking over a game that was a success, then you would have raised an eyebrow and sighed in pity when you found out that Microsoft handed Crackdown over to the fresh company, Ruffian Games.

Well Microsoft have have backed up their plans, and reading the big picture you will realize there is still hope, and what a great hope it is.

Apparently, it would seem Mr. Spencer believes Realtime Worlds is simply too busy developing APB to give a Crackdown sequel the attention it deserves. “I wanted to make sure that anything we work on is correctly nurtured … we had to find the right team who really understood what game it is – and that was Billy [Thompson] and the team at Ruffian.” Crackdown 2 Ruffian Games since the studio’s inception late last year. will be the first game developed by Ruffian Games since the studio’s inception late last year.

My mind is at rest, finally.
