Gears of War 3 Leaked + Another Epic Announcement Imminent?

Gears of War 3 had already been previously confirmed for a 2011 release

The internet had been buzzing with rumours about what Cliff Bleszinski’s big announcement was going to be on the Jimmy Fallon Show next Monday in the US, after his appearance had been pushed back from Thursday. Obviously the big rumour was Gears of War 3, the final installment in Epic Games‘ blockbuster trilogy.

Well that rumour was confirmed earlier today, though by complete accident. Perhaps it was timed to automatically go live after the original date of the TV appearance and somebody forgot to change it, or maybe somebody accidentally hit the big red ‘announce’ button, but it was confirmed on the Xbox 360 dashboard that Gears 3 will be released 12 months from now in April 2011.

While this announcement does please me more than just a little bit, I do have to feel sorry for Cliffy B and the team at Epic Games. I’m sure that a lot of work had gone into the announcement, only for it to just pop up in a completely non-spectacular way on Xbox Live. Even though it almost certainly wouldn’t have lived up to the almost ludicrously awesome Gears 2 announcement at GDC 2008, chances are they had something a bit more exciting planned to go with that TV appearance.

However, Cliffy B updated his Twitter not all that long ago, saying that there will be “two announcements about two upcoming games” on Monday. One of the other rumours below Gears 3 in the original hype around the appearance was the as yet un-named shooter from People Can Fly, a studio acquired not too long ago by Epic Games. Chances are that’s what it will be. Or maybe even Shadow Complex 2? We shall see…

Even though the main, big announcement has already been ruined, I’m sure it will still be worth tuning in to the Jimmy Fallon show (on YouTube most likely if you don’t live in the US like myself) to watch Cliff Bleszinski’s announcements next week. He is not the type to disappoint…

Epic Have No Regrets About Making Gears MS Exclusive

Gears of War is one of the biggest exclusive franchises on the Xbox 360

Industry analyst Michael Pachter claimed in a roundtable discussion with GameTrailers that Epic Games “regret” making Gears of War a Microsoft exclusive franchise. He said that they were probably “itching” to bring the games to the PS3.

Well Mark Rein, Vice-President of Epic Games today responded to that claim, and denied it. He said that Epic has a “great relationship with Microsoft” and that they “have no regrets”.

Given that Gears of War is a massively popular franchise already (Gears 2 was behind only Halo 3 and the Call of Duty games in the top games on Xbox Live in 2009), it is hardly surprising that Epic would feel this way. Without the financial backing from Microsoft (remember that “Mad World” trailer for the first game?) it is highly unlikely that Gears would have met the success that it did.

Either way, if you’re waiting to play Gears of War on your PS3, don’t hold your breath…

Epic Games have announced that Gears of War 3 will not be released for the current Xbox 360, and is more than likely to be ‘next-gen’ release, meaning it will not be out for a predicted four, or even five years.

President of Epic Games, Mike Capps, was at the Tokyo Game Show this weekend and revealed: “If there were a next Gears of War, that will be for the next console generation, whenever that is. If someone knows, please tell me! That’s about four or five years away, I think.”

Capps also stated that the company has been working on Unreal Engine 4, the successor to the godly Unreal Engine 3, for seven years now, and that it would be in fully functional with the next generation of consoles.

Shadow Complex: the record breaking XBLA title from Chair Entertainment

.Epic Games’ Summer of Arcade title Shadow Complex has been raved about all over the internet since it’s launch on August 19th. With a Meta-Critic rating of 89, it has certainly had a positive reception.

Such a positive reception in fact, that it has managed to get over 200,000 downloads in it’s first week, breaking the record for Xbox Live Arcade first week sales. At 1,200 Microsoft Points (about £14) it must be a darn good game to get that many downloads…
