World of Warcraft: Cataclysm Entering Alpha Stage

wowcat is reporting that the next World of Warcraft expansion, Cataclysm, will be entering Alpha stage starting tomorrow.

The leak originally stated that the alpha would be burned to disc, but that has since been disproved as fake. Instead the alpha will be distributed digitally as the ‘Friends and Family Alpha Phase’, which means you still won’t be able to try it. However, if the expansion is entering alpha stage then it shows that it’s moving along and a beta could be ready in a few months.

Cataclysm, which will ‘destroy Azeroth as we know it’, has no release date as of yet but Blizzard is said to be aiming for a release this year.

That’s right kids; Everquest is far from dead and now has a new expansion from SOE. The expansion pack, called Underfoot, will be the sixteenth expansion for the long-running MMORPG.

Underfoot costs $39.99 and includes all currently released content – which means all the current expansion packs – plus new zones, quests, raids, updated tradeskills and an achievement system. SOE clearly don’t believe this game is dead yet.

You can find out more and buy the expansion from the game’s official website.

World of Warcraft ‘Completed’ By Taiwanese Man

Ok, so an MMO can’t really be completed like a normal game but one Taiwanese man has pretty much done everything that World of Warcraft currently has to offer. The anonymous man has reportedly completed all of the game’s 986 achievements, becoming the first person to achieve this goal since the systems launch in Wrath of the Lich King.

However, those with knowledge of the game (i.e not me, even though I played it for a year) say that he’s technically one off reaching the target due to exploitation of a glitch. Apparently one achievement – ‘BB King’ – can’t legitimately be unlocked until next weeks 3.3 patch, Winter Veil. Due to his inability to wait another week players are saying he can’t claim to be the first until he does it properly, which surely won’t be a problem for someone who seems to have spent every waking hour on WoW.

Kudos to him, I guess.

GOA Pulls Plug On Warrior Epic

Warrior Epic

European publisher GOA has announced that “with great regret” it will, on 21st December, pull the plug on free fantasy MMO Warrior Epic.

The publisher cites the lack of players on the European servers, releasing the following statement:

“Unfortunately, despite major efforts by the development team to improve Warrior Epic since its launch, the game hasn’t achieved the player population we had hoped for”

For the time being the US servers will remain open, so not all is lost.  Remaining European players will receive a loyalty package from GOA, which we’re assuming will act as an incentive to join one of their other MMO’s; with freed up resources being directed towards improving Warhammer Online, League of Legends and Pangya.

It’s a shame as the game was only launched in May, but there are a countless number of fantasy MMO’s out there – all trying to take on big boy World of Warcraft – and Warrior Epic didn’t exactly do anything particularly unique.
