Stepto on Xbox LIVE at PAX

Stephen Toulouse is the Director of Policy and Enforcement for Xbox LIVE. Better known as Stepto (his Gamertag), he manages the team that wields the banhammer on Microsoft’s online service. His recent talk at PAX, the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington, USA, combines his usual cutting wit with nuggets of information about how Xbox LIVE is policed.

So what are some of the things that get you permanently banned? Repeat egregious behavior. Things like fraud, piracy. Let’s see I’m missing something. There’s something else…oh yeah. Naked Uno. Actually, naked anything. But come on, naked Xbox LIVE Uno was not meant to be. Naked chutes and ladders, maybe. Naked Risk…I can see it. But no naked Uno. So to be clear, and I know no one here is one of these people, but being naked on the camera on Xbox LIVE is a Permaban offense no matter what the activity.

A transcript of Stepto’s talk is available on his blog site, while the talk itself is available on Youtube.

Sam Fisher’s legendary NVG’s return

I think it’s honestly fair to say, we can all breath a sigh of relief as our Agent, no not 007, but Sam Fisher will return with his famous night vision goggles.

So not only do we actually get to hurt people, we get to look cool doing it.. in the dark, seeing them through walls, stalking them like the professionals we are.

“To prove it, he showed a very brief video clip (which we were not allowed to film) of Fisher in action, green-tinted goggles firmly affixed to his head. The clip showed Fisher creeping toward a building across an outdoor area and taking cover behind a crate. Then, the familiar high-pitched whine of the night-vision goggles snapped on, and the scene turned to a washed-out semi-wireframe view. And with that, the clip was over. Just enough for Ubisoft to prove that Fisher still has access to the gadget that helped define the series.

And to whet your appetite to this game a little bit more.

“Another classic Splinter Cell gadget, the sticky camera, is also back in Conviction, and Ubisoft showed a clip of that as well.

Another game being shown off at PAX in Seattle was Valve’s Left 4 Dead 2. They were showing the third of the five new campaigns, entitled “Dark Carnival”.

They are also showing off a new special infected, this quote taken from ComputerandVideoGames.com:

Valve is also unveiling a new Boss infected monster coming in the full version of Left 4 Dead 2. Known as “The Jockey” this is the third new Boss infected from L4D2 revealed thus far (the Charger was revealed at E3, The Spitter at Comic Con). The Jockey lets you attack lone Survivors and wrestle control of their movement away from them-into fire, off ledges, or straight into the middle of a zombie horde. “

Thousands of people have been attending the Penny Arcade Expo in Seattle, Washington, USA where many game developers like to show off their new games.

One such game is BioWare and EA’s Mass Effect 2, the sequel to the award winning original which is set for a 2010 release. Four new screenshots have come out of PAX for ME 2, and while they don’t show anything particularly controversial, they do showcase the fantastic visuals of the game as well as showing Shephard and two new characters (Thane and Grunt) in action… kind of.
