PS3

In a move that will no doubt have Sonic wagging his finger furiously a news piece appeared and was then hastily removed on segapr.segaamerica.com this morning blowing the cover on some on Sony’s upcoming plans for PSN network and backwards compatibility on the PS3.

Being quick on the mouse we managed to grab the below which details the juiciest details from this “secret” meeting

Sonic Anniversary
Could put out collectors edition with all old sonic games on one BD disc.

“Best of Sonic” for around $99.
SCEA would love PSN exclusive power ups/different game modes (like Castlevania’s flip it over/backwards)

PS2 emulator for PS3 (confidential)
SCEA wants to sell all PS2 titles on PSN (GTA Vice City/Sonic/etc)
For co Marketing money show PS3 controller on TV ads – similar to EA Madden Spots, NCAA, etc…

London Olympics
Perfect opportunity for Motion Controller integration.

DC Digital Titles
If we provide a list of DC titles SCEA will let us know which ones they’re interested in having exclusively.
If we give them a long period of exclusivity they’ll give us more marketing support.

PSP Titles
For SKU differentiation it’s best to offer features that are slightly different from PS3 version.
Titles that are coming up on PSP are Assassin’s Creed II, GTA China Wars, Resident Evil, Little Big Planet – all massive franchises.
SCEA has a specific PSP deck which they can send up with their hardware director for a chat.

Of the above it is no doubt the PS2 backwards compatibility and Dreamcast digital titles that will be most eagerly awaited….watch this space

Following the announcement this week of the upcoming 250GB Xbox 360 Modern Warfare 2 bundle and the news that a similarly themed Forza 3 bundle is incoming, Sony have moved to distance themselves from similar bundles appearing for the newly revitalised PS3 Slim.

SCEA have denied the fact that the above is indeed a legitimate upcoming SKU whilst at the same time saying that they cannot comment on rumour or speculation regarding other SCE regions – that old chestnut !

I think all that means that Europe will be receiving an Uncharted 2 bundle sometime around launch of the game on October 16.

The current rumour and speculation is that it will include the console, 250GB hard drive and a copy of the game for £299, only £50 more than the current 120GB model – no wonder they’re denying it for now.

PS3 Slim sells 40,000 in the UK

PS3 Slim

Based on a quick back-of-fag-packet calculation, it appears that the PS3 may have sold as many as 40,000 units in the UK, in the first week alone. According to the BBC, the PS2 Slim sold 50,000 in the UK. Sony recently commented that first week sales of the PS3 Slim amounted to 80% of that number, hence the figure in the headline.

Sony must be extremely pleased, given the less than stellar sales of the original version of the PS3.

Finally its been announced, the PS3 Slim is hitting our stores from the first week in September.  Its boasted the be 32% smaller but from the unboxing guide that Joystiq posted its looking on par to be the same size as the Xbox 360.  Priced at a modest £249 and boasting a 120gb Hard Drive we expect this to fly off of the shelves this Christmas.  That price increase isn’t looking so great now is it Microsoft?
