Sony Trademarks ‘Playstation Arc’ In Japan

The wand like motion control device that Sony revealed at E3 last June is yet to be given a proper name (other than “Sony Motion Controller” anyway), but a trademark filing and previous reports have put us one step closer to finding out just what Sony intends to call its new controller.

Siliconera noticed that Sony has previously filed a trademark for the name “Playstation Arc” in Japan. While companies seem to file trademarks for random names all the time this one is particularly intriguing because VG247 said earlier this year that an anonymous source had told them “Arc” would indeed be the final name.  The domain PlaystationArc.com has also been registered by Sony, whilst THQ’s CEO has referred to the device as “Arc” a number of times.

If we put everything together then it may seem fairly obvious that the device will be called “Arc” when it is released later this year. Of course, we could all be wrong and Sony may just be registering the name for another idea they have in the pipeline. In the end I guess the only thing we can say is to place your bets now and hope that all the evidence is correct.

GDC is coming up next week, so hopefully we’ll find out more details then.

X10 News: First Modern Warfare 2 DLC Hits Xbox 360 First, Maybe in Spring

Microsoft has reiterated that that the first piece of Modern Warfare 2 DLC will come to Xbox 360 first.

The earlier rumour was confirmed at X10, the resurrected Xbox expo, with the news that the 360 will have a 30 day head start over all other systems. The rumour that the release date will be 1 March has not been confirmed, with Activision delivering a “no comment” on that.

The worrying thing is that there’s another rumour that says the DLC will only include two maps, which is pretty poor if you ask me. This exclusivity trend is also worrying, as a lot of gamers are going to miss out on new content for a whole month (although it’s not as bad as the GTA IV DLC 360 timed exclusives that have only just been announced for PS3).

So it’s pretty much rumour central here right now, but we’ll be posting more solid info as it comes in.

Dead Space 2 May Have Multiplayer

Yum Yum!

I officially declare today ‘International Dead Space 2 News Day’, although I don’t want to be giving EA’s PR department any ideas. This time next week we’ll probably see a Dead Space 2 flag flying about Buckingham Palace, but don’t hold me to that.

Anyway, a job listing by EA seems to suggest that Dead Space 2 will contain some sort of multiplayer aspect. Part of the listing states that the successful applicant will “Own the level design for the online game, be able to work collaboratively with Creative Director and Online Producer to create extremely fun, satisfying and polished multiplayer levels.”

Of course, this doesn’t mean there will be multiplayer in the game, it just means that they’re building something that may or may not be scrapped at a later date. With a lot of developers thinking they have to shove some sort of multiplayer aspect into a game these days I won’t be surprised if Dead Space 2 turns out to have it, but I’m going to bet that popular opinion would want it to be some sort of co-op mode and not some crappy deathmatch against Necromorphs.

Well, that’s that then, although I’m pretty sure they’ll be some other Dead Space 2 related news sometime soon. Same time tomorrow then?

Visceral Teasing Dead Space 2?

Dead Space 2

A strange inkblot has appeared on the Dead Space Twitter account (which only has one tweet, so make of that what you will), which seems to be out first teaser of Dead Space 2.

You can certainly make out what appear to be ‘Necromorphs’ – the creatures from the game – and there is also a theory that the ‘marker’ is present in the centre of the inkblot. As for the “Unitology symbols” at the bottom someone has taken the time to translate it; and it turns out that it allegedly says “the nightmare is over but it will not end!”. Click here for the full picture and see if you can make out anything else from the ‘teaser’.

Of course, we already knew Dead Space 2 was coming so something like this is no surprise. Personally I’m looking forward to shredding more ‘Necromorphs’ while manically laughing out of sheer fear.
